Hello from Australia!

Hmmm...no posting for Thursday...that's because I technically missed out on Thursday...I don't know where it went, but I believe I'll get it back when I re-cross the international dateline upon my return. All went well with the flights; I actually dozed for a good chunk of time on the LA-MEL flight, so it didn't seem quite as long as I'd anticipated. Cleared immigration and customs, hopped aboard the shuttle and reached Melbourne by mid morning. Not ready to succumb to impending jet lag, I took advantage of the gorgeously sunny winter day by meandering along the riverfront and through the lane ways to get a feel for this city that is to be my home-away-from-home for the next three weeks. Two big challenges for the day have been to remember to look right-left-right before crossing the streets (backward and non-instinctual, but I'm sure I'll grasp it quickly) and to get my wifi working (which is why these posts are a bit tardy). Now late afternoon, jet lag is creeping up and closing in on me....my eyes are getting heavy and I feel like I've lost my sharp wit...may be time to give in and take a nap.

"I'm leaving...on a jetplane...."

Departure day has finally arrived! I have a long day ahead of me....a three hour flight from Seattle to Los Angeles, a seven hour layover in LA and then a 15 1/2 hour flight from LA to Melbourne. Hoping that all goes smoothly...I'll catch up when I land and get my bearings straight!

Back to school.... Aussie style!

August signifies back to school....only this time, I'll be heading to school in Australia. During my sojourn to the flip side of the globe, I'll be visiting the gardens and kitchens in seven primary schools, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation headquarters and a couple of locales that have cooking classes. I'll post updates, photos and videos after each visit, so make sure to check back in!

Here's my schedule:

Monday, August 2: Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation (a great way to start my learning experience.....going straight to the source!)
Tuesday, August 3: Westgarth Primary School
Wednesday, August 4: Yarra Primary School
Thursday, August 5: Veg Out Community Gardens, Royal Botanic Garden
Friday, August 6: North Melbourne Primary School
Monday, August 9: Little Spoons Cooking Class
Tuesday, August 10: Altona Meadows Primary School
Wednesday, August 11: Collingwood (the very first school in AU to implement the SAKG program)
Thursday, August 12: East Bentleigh Primary School
Friday, August 13: Cooking class at Queen Victoria Market
